 EVENT 1: JOEL ONG

The connection between art and wind is multifaceted. For example, “many ancient artistic characterizations of the wind were inspired by sensory experience and/or personified through anthropomorphised depictions endowed with abilities that aligned with weather behavior (Kennedy). In today’s event, I learned about Ong’s artistic research into winds, changes in aesthetics of clouds, artificial vibrations of eardrums, and more. The goal of this event was to highlight different structures of art through sound. During his presentation, Ong introduced several projects that were related to wind and science. For example, in one of his projects called “Aeolian Traces,” he collected the voices of undocumented migrants to “generate gusts of winds and trigger sounds in a database of recordings in these countries’ native languages” (Ong). In another project called “Between Us a Breeze,” Ong introduced the idea of breath, reflecting pool, and wind. As you talk to somebody across the board, your voice and wind passes through the reflecting pool, which connects to art and technology by incorporating creativity. These projects introduce the idea of a third culture and how “artists and scientists share a focus on observation and perception to capture details and understand the world” (Abbadia).

The picture below is another project called “Silence.” This work takes a selection of anecdotal stories and presents them through actors on a screen limited to non-vocal expressions, and a reflecting pool that is activated by sciatica visualizations of their speech (Ong). I found this project very interesting because it shows how time does not move but vibrant does through the reflecting pool. Additionally, a person who was visually impaired put a hand into the water and felt the stories of the actors, which demonstrates how art can transcend traditional sensory boundaries with technology.

Silence (2022)

In week 1, we learned about two cultures, a division between humanities and the sciences and a hindered communication between these two spheres (Vesna, Lecture Part I). During this event, I could see the connection between art and science through Ong’s projects. Overall, this event helped me gain a better understanding of the relationship between art and science through visualization. Most of Ong’s projects aim to convey scientific topics through artistic mediums and visualization. Without art, it would not be possible to visually engage with these concepts.
